CLIENT

Our client is a leading manufacturer and supplier of bitumen based products, providing customers with asphalt, blended binders and emulsion products. They are a listed company and employ more than 18,000 people. They continue to invest in state-of-the-art technology such as asphalt plants that use more recycled products and substantially less energy.

 

POSITION

Our client has a vacancy in its National R&D Laboratory (NRDL), which is located in Melbourne’s Northern Suburbs. This is a role requiring some experience and so we are looking for Degree qualified candidates, preferably in a scientific discipline.

This position is initially on a 12-month contract that will commence in early 2020 and will require you to work 38 hours per week, Monday to Friday. The successful candidate will initially be conducting quality control testing of bituminous emulsions and road construction products then move on to mix design. The role involves:

  • Testing of construction materials is always time-sensitive, so we require someone who respects this urgency and has good attention to detail;
  • In situ evaluation of formulated products will need you to engage with experienced road crews, so as to troubleshoot as required; and
  • Formulation of new products used in pavement preservation and bitumen emulsions.

 

REQUIREMENTS

We are looking for an enthusiastic Technical Officer, ideally someone with experience working in an industrial laboratory. Ultimately, success in this role would lead to you being considered a technical specialist within the construction materials industry—you must be willing to get your hands dirty!

  • Bachelors degree, or equivalent, preferably with a major in a scientific/engineering discipline;
  • Hands-on experience within an industrial laboratory associated with manufacturing of speciality chemicals or construction materials (e.g., polymers, oils, bitumen, asphalt, etc) will be highly regarded;
  • Competency in adhering to well-documented procedures for performing specialised  test methods that will include measurement of pH and  viscosity, determination of curing time, stability, elasticity, and particle charge and size;
  • Good writing skills and computer literacy in English;
  • Must have a good eye for detail and an appreciation for safety in the workplace;
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills—your day-to-day work will involve liaising with personnel across all levels of the company and so you must be comfortable  with readily adapting your communication style accordingly;
  • It is essential you have good time management skills and a proven ability to multi-task; and
  • You MUST be a team player and reliable!
