THE CLIENT
Australia’s Open Pool Australian Lightwater (OPAL) reactor is a state-of-the-art 20-megawatt multi-purpose reactor that uses low enriched uranium (LEU) fuel to achieve a range of activities, which includes irradiation facilities for the purpose of radiopharmaceutical production and the provision of neutron beams for various research purposes.
Our client’s health products save lives and improve human health; and, as it provides a reliable source of neutrons for beamlines at the Bragg Institute, the OPAL reactor facilitates a variety of scientific research.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Based in a beautiful suburb, South-West of Sydney, this is a full-time ongoing position. It is a role suitable for an early career engineer with several years of industrial experience or a recent graduate.
Reporting to either an OPAL Engineering Group Leader or the Engineering Manager, the System Engineer role is key to ensuring that operating, maintenance, and capital investment strategies for the advanced reactor are optimised. Through sound decision making and planning, and continuously improved through the feedback of operating experience and data, the role includes a level of responsibility for the engineering design and configuration of allocated plant systems that support safety, reliability and maintainability requirements.
Your core duties will be build up and maintain an overall understanding of the drivers and limitations of system reliability and a capability to provide sound technical support and advice to operations and maintenance functions.
Ultimately, as you will develop an appropriate level of expertise over a period of time, in the System Engineer role you will become the organisation’s nominated resident expert in relation to the plant systems and equipment allocated to you.
Any technical knowledge relevant to the irradiation of materials and targets—including mechanical processes and materials handling systems operating in high-reliability and/or safety-critical applications—would be a potential headstart in developing and acquiring the necessary competence, skills, knowledge, and experience.
