Our client is a Government Department based in Canberra which provides human health risk assessment services to the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority on agricultural and veterinary (agvet) chemicals.



Our client is looking for a highly skilled and motivated Senior Toxicologist to lead a team of professionals responsible for the assessment of agricultural pesticides and veterinary medicines.This role will also oversee the program itself and provide the support and guidance needed to ensure that all relevant deadlines are met by the group.

This is a pivotal role and requires the successful candidate to perform a variety of duties some of which include:

  • The provision of scientific/technical leadership to a group of regulatory scientists who specialise in toxicology and the assessment of chemicals with regards to human health.
  • The provision of scientific/technical leadership to staff on public health and OH&S matters
  • Project and team management
  • Peer review of exposure and risk assessments
  • Strategic regulatory advice regarding the regulation of chemicals
  • Implementation of reforms in relation to the Office
  • Management of key stakeholder relations



To be successful in your application you must meet the following criteria:

  • Appropriate qualifications in toxicology, pharmacology, chemistry, biochemistry or similar
  • Working knowledge of regulatory toxicology would be highly regarded
  • Experience in risk assessment so that you can assist and direct staff within the group
  • Past / current experience from other relevant government regulatory bodies such as APVMA or TGA will be highly regarded
  • Able to engage staff and encourage their contributions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as you will be expected to communicate expected outcomes
  • Proven ability to exercise a significant degree of independence to perform this important leadership role
  • Experienced in initiating, establishing and maintaining strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
