Our client is an integral part of the APAC Division of a global biotechnology and specialty chemicals company. They work in partnership with wood processors and manufacturers to preserve, protect and enhance the durability and resilience of wood products against decay, mould, termites, fire and other hazards. With close ties to the New Zealand and SE Asian operations, their small yet highly specialised R&D group, produces APVMA registered chemical products for use by the Timber Industry.
Due to internal movement, a rare and exciting opportunity has arisen in our client’s R&D Group. Based in the western suburbs of Melbourne, this role reports to the Director of Global Product & Application Development.
The key functions of this role include contributing to the growth and support of the APAC wood protection business. This will be achieved by developing new products and processes and by providing technical support to other functional areas such as sales/marketing, regulatory and operations. You will be leading and managing projects from concept to commercialisation.
Other key duties include:
Responsible for the management and completion of Wood Protection application development projects according to agreed objectives
Planning and rigorous completion of scientific work to agreed standards
Experimental design and execution, interpretation of scientific results, and the reporting and maintenance of appropriate documentation
Where appropriate, management of local budgets relating to R&D expenditure and research providers
Management/updating of CRM database for assigned contacts, sales activities & Technical Support projects for the APAC business
Completion of management reports and other administrative tasks related to the APAC Research and Technology function
Assisting in maintaining an efficient, organised and safe work environment
Must be willing to take responsibility for decisions, consequences and results
To be considered for this role, you will need to meet the following criteria:
A PhD in Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Organic Chemistry or Materials Science would be highly desirable
The ideal candidate will have in-depth & thorough understanding of product development in at least one of the following areas:
(i) formulation chemistry and science
(ii) wood structure & how it relates to preservative treatment
(iii) microbiology & efficacy of preservative system
A minimum of 4-5 years experience in product development within Agrochemical or Coating industries. Other relevant industries will also be considered
Must be commercially aware and able to demonstrate an understanding of the need for efficiency, cost-effectiveness and customer care
Key to this role will be your flexible “can do” attitude, excellent work ethic and initiative whilst working autonomously or as part of a team
Ability to carry out scientific experiments in a rigorous, efficient & safe manner, and analyse results appropriately (including statistical analysis)
Excellent written and verbal communication and report writing skills together with strong project management capabilities
You must be a lateral and innovative thinker with a strong practical ability and exceptional problem-solving skills
You will possess excellent time management skills, high attention to detail and a strong ability to multi-task
Some management experience (e.g. management of laboratory staff, preparing reports for management team) would be highly regarded
Ability to undertake occasional domestic and international travel within APAC
A full driving licence
