Our client, a well known government agency based in Melbourne, is currently looking for a Senior Chemist, with materials chemistry knowledge and strong chemistry skills to work in the Hazard Management Team.



With tertiary qualifications up to the level of PhD, you will be involved with providing chemical development and testing supports. You will be focusing on developing and utilising calorimetric and fluorometric reactive chemistries on solid supports, and their integration into an electronics platform.

In summary your duties will involve the provision of technical and professional support in the following areas:

  • Development of reactive chemistries from existing methods and principles
  • Testing and evaluations of existing and developmental rigs
  • The integration of material into evaluations systems within the platform
  • Assist in the identification, generation and testing of reactive chemical systems/species targeted to specific chemical vapour threats
  • Identify appropriate substrate media on which reactive chemical systems may be optimally mobilised (sensitivity, stability, manufacturability etc)
  • Conduct high level wet chemistry laboratory skills
  • Be trained to handle highly toxic materials
  • Assist with general laboratory duties

*You must be willing to wear a full face respirator mark and undertake an extensive background security check.

This is a contract position for the duration of 2 years.



To be considered for this position you must meet the following criteria:

  • You MUST BE an Australian Citizen! PR IS NOT SUFFICIENT
  • Have tertiary qualifications such as a PhD or lower – degree minimum (Chemistry related)
  • Several years experience working within a Laboratory Environment
  • Broad knowledge of chemical synthesis
  • Ability to adapt to new methods
  • General knowledge using spectroscopy methods (GC-MS, LC-MS etc)
  • Excellent high level wet chemistry laboratory skills
  • Experience working with toxic chemicals would be highly regarded
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as a team member or individually under general direction.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and a demonstrated ability to complete tasks on time.
