Australia, Queensland
Full Time
  • Operational responsibility for a team of degree-qualified chemists
  • Must possess exceptional hands-on competency with LC-MS/MS
  • Thorough knowledge of NATA accreditation requirements is invaluable

Our client is a statutory body within Queensland that operates a state-of-the-art testing laboratory, which is used to monitor the industry it services to ensure the activities under its purview are compliant with all applicable regulations. The body falls under the purview of the Queensland Government and their ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory is located in Brisbane.

Ensure Operational Performance of the Laboratory!

We are looking for an Experienced Analytical Chemist with substantial prior experience in the operational oversight of a laboratory and adept in performing analyses using chromatography and mass spectrometry. A thorough working knowledge of NATA’s Accreditation Criteria for a testing laboratory maintaining compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 requirements should be seen as invaluable.

With the formal job title being Principal Chemist (Operations), this is a newly created full-time permanent position, which our client has advised has been defined as being a Professional Officer Level 5 (PO5).

This important role will provide effective hands-on operational coordination and day-to-day oversight to a team of about a dozen degree-qualified chemists. It is a senior position and member of the laboratory management team providing direction and guidance to individuals who are technically competent for the activities they perform. Nevertheless, where necessary, the Principal Chemist will also need to be prepared to get hands-on with the testing that is conducted—indeed the incumbent will work towards attaining membership of an internationally recognised professional association.

This position shall provide leadership, guidance and supervision to staff and undertake complex analytical activities for screening and confirming the presence of prohibited and other regulated substances in various matrices and be responsible for approving reports that are routinely put forward as evidence in administrative and judicial proceedings.

Acting as the operational lead within the Analytical Services laboratory, the ideal candidate will need to meet the following selection criteria:

  • A tertiary qualification with a major in chemistry, which must be from a university course accredited by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) or otherwise assessed by VETASSESS for its equivalence;
  • Chartered Chemist (CChem) status or eligibility to apply for this level of RACI membership is highly desirable;\
  • Strong interpersonal skills that are proven by several years’ managerial experience within an analytical laboratory;
  • Deep-seated understanding of ISO/IEC 17025 and interpreting NATA’s accreditation requirements for testing laboratories;
  • Familiarity with performing chromatography (i.e. GC & LC) in conjunction with mass spectrometry is essential, particularly the use of MS/MS for confirmatory analysis of the presence of a prohibited substance; and
  • Your understanding of uncertainty of measurement and an ability to unambiguously define how a limit of detection is determined must be demonstrable.
