The Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) is part of the Australian Department of Defence dedicated to providing science and technology support for Australia’s defence and national security needs.  DST Group is a national leader in safeguarding Australia by delivering valued scientific advice and innovative solutions for Defence and national security.



DSTG require an experienced Scientist / Chemist to research and formulate paints to be used on Defence platforms to enhance capability. The successful candidate will work in the Specialised Coatings Technology Group at the DST Group site located at Fishermans Bend, Melbourne.

The work will have a laboratory based focus with a small component of field work. Surface coatings will be formulated, applied and tested. A number of key projects will be undertaken simultaneously with some supervision.

As the R&D Specialist, you will undertake high-quality research into the formulation, manufacture and application of novel paints for Defence platforms and will test them against standard coating specifications. The focus will be on the formulation of two-pack polyurethane coatings containing metallic pigments.

This is a full-time contract role that will ideally commence November or December this year until mid-2021. 

Some of the tasks associated with this role include:

  • Formulation and application of novel, metallic pigment-based, two-pack polyurethane coatings in green, tan and black hues.
  • Testing of these novel coatings against several paint specifications, especially with regards to soiling resistance of aged coatings using artificial soiling agents.
  • Application of these tested coatings onto demonstrator vehicles.
  • Literature review/assessment of different resin technologies for novel coatings, such as isocyanate free coatings.
  • Delivery of progress reports on the status of coating formulations every quarter.
  • There may be occasional requirements to work offsite for field trials. Location of trials will be regional Victoria, two hours drive from the city.



To be considered for this unique opportunity you MUST BE AN AUSTRALIAN CITIZEN and will need to meet the following criteria:

  • A degree, honours degree or PhD qualification in the fields of Chemistry, Materials Science, Formulation Science, or similar, and/or qualifications from Surface Coatings Associations with relevant industrial experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in coatings technology especially in the formulation, application and testing of two-part solvent-borne coatings. 
  • Demonstrable experience in the formulation of surface coatings containing metallic pigments will be highly regarded
  • Demonstrated ability to test surface coatings against specifications and accelerated weathering methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct scientific research through the use of scientific databases/literature.
  • Extensive knowledge of the characteristics and synthesis of polymers used in surface coatings applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct work with limited guidance and supervision.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to present scientific results both orally and in written reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to comply with Work, Health and Safety policies.
  • Problem solving, innovative thinking and excellent attention to detail is a must
  • Ability to multi-task and strong time management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as a team member or autonomously.
  • Be adaptable and flexible to deal with a varying work load.
  • Great work ethic and reliability are essential for this busy role.
  • MUST be Willing to Undergo a Security Clearance.
