The Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) is part of the Australian Department of Defence dedicated to providing science and technology support for Australia’s defence and national security needs.  DST Group is a national leader in safeguarding Australia by delivering valued scientific advice and innovative solutions for Defence and national security.



DSTG require an experienced Scientist / Chemist to research and formulate paints to be used on Defence platforms to enhance capability. The successful candidate will work in the Specialised Coatings Technology Group at the DST Group site located at Fishermans Bend, Melbourne.

The work will have a laboratory-based focus with a small component of fieldwork. Surface coatings will be formulated, applied and tested. A number of key projects will be undertaken simultaneously with some supervision.

As the R&D Specialist, you will undertake high-quality research into the formulation, manufacture and application of novel paints for Defence platforms and will test them against standard coating specifications. The focus will be on the formulation of coatings containing specialised pigments and polymers.

Benefits of employment under a fixed-term tenure by CS Executive Group include paid annual leave, sick leave, and public holidays. Alternatively, under a contract based solely on hours worked a higher hourly rate of pay can be provided through casual employment. This role will ideally commence in July this year until mid-May 2023. There is an option for a further 12 months extension or parts thereof to mid-May 2024.

Some of the tasks associated with this role include:

  • Formulation and application of novel pigments and polymers having unique absorption and dissipation properties.
  • Testing of these novel coatings against several paint specifications.
  • Application of these tested coatings by spraying onto demonstrator vehicles.
  • Assess coating stability via accelerated and exterior weathering.
  • Contribute to the design of the field trials and apply newly developed coatings on test platforms.
  • Literature review/assessment of different technologies for novel coatings.
  • Develop and validate SOPs for new product formulation.
  • Delivery of progress reports on the status of coating formulations every quarter.



To be considered for this unique opportunity you MUST BE AN AUSTRALIAN CITIZEN and will need to meet the following criteria:

  • A degree, honours degree or PhD qualification in the fields of Chemistry, Materials Science, Formulation Science, or similar, and/or qualifications from Surface Coatings Associations with relevant industrial experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in coatings technology especially in the formulation, application and testing of liquid-applied, spray-applied and ambient-cure coatings.
  • Demonstrable experience in the formulation of surface coatings containing inorganic pigments.
  • Demonstrated ability to test surface coatings against specifications and accelerated weathering methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct scientific research through the use of scientific databases/literature.
  • Extensive knowledge of the characteristics and synthesis of polymers used in surface coatings applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct work with limited guidance and supervision.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to present scientific results both orally and in written reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to comply with Work, Health and Safety policies.
  • Problem-solving, innovative thinking and excellent attention to detail is a must
  • Ability to multi-task and strong time management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as a team member or autonomously.
  • Be adaptable and flexible to deal with a varying workload.
  • Great work ethic and reliability are essential for this busy role.
  • MUST be Willing to Undergo a Security Clearance.
