CLIENT

Our client is part of a not-for-profit, highly respected Biomedical Research Facility with more than 100 staff based near Melbourne’s CBD. A Division within this Organisation is the National Reference Laboratory (NRL). With a work-force of about 30 scientific personnel, NRL supports laboratories and point-of-care sites that perform testing for the diagnosis and management of infectious disease in Australia and internationally.

Established as a not-for-profit scientific organisation, as part of the Australian Government’s HIV and AIDS strategy in 1985, NRL is contracted by the Department of Health and licensed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). It supports collaborative scientific partners worldwide in the promotion of accurate diagnosis and management of human communicable diseases, including HIV, HCV and HTLV.

NRL does this by providing specialised services, including pre- and post-market evaluations of test kits; provision of quality assurance programs to laboratories; highly specific and non-routine testing services; consultation, education and training for laboratories. These services are provided globally.

 

THE ROLE

This position is accountable for three distinct but interconnected areas within the Division, and will be responsible for coaching, leading and managing the people in these teams. As a TGA licensed and NATA accredited facility, the successful candidate will ensure scientific integrity is maintained through a high level of scientific skill and commitment to standards.

As the successful candidate, you will possess a broad industry knowledge of infectious diseases, and your existing profile will allow you to build relationships with industry leaders, researchers and other organisations to identify emerging trends and develop scientific strategies to position the Division to thrive and grow.

Some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Scientific Expertise & Leadership for the scientific services provided, including Quality Assessment Schemes (design and manufacture) and Diagnostic/ Reference Testing Teams.
  • People leadership, including coaching, development and support for Team Leaders
  • Strategic Leadership for the Division’s Scientific Services, in particular developing and maintaining relationships with diagnostic and blood screening laboratories nationally and internationally, World Health Organisation, in-vitro diagnostic device (IVD) Manufacturers, and other relevant potential clients
  • Manage the deliverables and budget to the Division’s requirements
  • Occupational Health & Safety within an Infectious Diseases Laboratory Environment
  • Compliance with all relevant accreditation and regulatory requirements

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

To be short-listed for this responsible role, you will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Tertiary scientific qualifications, of at least Masters level and likely to have several publications within the realm of Infectious Diseases
  • Previous senior leadership role within an  infectious diseases laboratory, including operational budget management
  • Open and transparent management style, able to empower and mentor to develop staff’s capability
  • Authority within Infectious Diseases, credible and capable of engaging stakeholders, problem solving and growing the Division’s new business through networks
  • Detailed knowledge of infectious diseases testing, including standards and regulations
  • Industry knowledge of IVDs for Infectious Diseases and Pathology Laboratory networks
  • Fellow of the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists or equivalent
