The Food and Nutrition Science and Technology Capability (FNSTC) within the Defence Science and Technology Group, (DST Group) provides science and technology advice and research in support of Defence’s fresh and combat ration feeding systems for use in combat ration packs.



The aim of the role is to provide scientific input into Science & Technology/Research and Development activities relating to fresh and ration pack feeding, including nutritional and dietary advice to Defence in relation to personnel health and performance.

This part-time contract position (2.5 days/week) will commence in July 2020 and is due to complete in June 2021.  In this role you can work remotely from home so it can be performed from anywhere in Australia. You will be manage your own hours as long as you meet the agreed timelines. The immediate work group are based at Scottsdale, Tasmania, so virtual meetings would be a component in the performance of this position.

The successful candidate will be undertaking the following duties:

  • Carry out scientific literature and Defence doctrine reviews to aggregate current knowledge so to inform the development of a nutrition, health and well-being framework to optimise military personnel performance
  • Evaluate and compare application of recipes and menu classification systems
  • Prepare and finalise activities in support of field work including dietary intake and energy expenditure
  • Provision of advice on food and nutrition legislative requirements and guidance
  • Data entry and analysis; report writing
  • Provide nutrition advice and general support to Science &Technology work programs and activities

The focus of this role is NOT undertaking nutrition and dietetic consultations with individual members of Defence. 



  • This government role requires the candidate to be an Australian citizenPR is NOT SUFFICIENT
  • Hold tertiary qualifications in Nutrition, Sports Nutrition, or a related field. Candidates undertaking a PhD in Human Nutrition would be well regarded
  • Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Access and willingness to use a well maintained and secure computer, with fast internet connection and ideally video conferencing ability
  • An ability to work individually, with a high level of autonomy under general direction
  • A demonstrated ability to work to deadlines and to successfully complete tasks on time
  • Advanced ability to search literature and compile fit-for-purpose reporting and summary information
