This position is initially a 6-month contract with the potential pathway to permanency.
Working days are Sunday-Thursday in an afternoon shift, 1 pm – 9.30 pm. The afternoon shift carries a loading and Sundays are paid double time.
The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting a range of daily laboratory microbiology and chemistry testing in accordance with production plans and company standards.
The successful candidate needs to demonstrate independence and proficiency in performing routine procedures.
Some key duties:
Perform daily microbiological testing on manufactured dairy products using a variety of test methods
Conduct chemical testing of manufactured products including total solids count, texture, pH, sensory, and etc.
Perform environmental testing including swabs & exposed plates and report results
Record test results using QLIMS, report results to supervisors, and action as necessary
Manage sample collection, retention of samples, shelf life, and product clearance
Organise additional product quality testing with external laboratories
Contribute to the overall maintenance and effectiveness of the Microbiology Laboratory including looking after inventories and supplies, including proper storage, maintenance, and transferring of microorganisms and the safe disposal of lab waste
Responsible for working closely with manufacturing personnel, safely executing laboratory work requests, maintaining and running relevant laboratory apparatus, testing equipment and documenting data in a timely and accurate manner
Understand the value of high-quality data and utilise Good Laboratory Practices to generate such data. Accurately and reliably record readings and observations using relevant equipment, instruments and where appropriate, software
Understand and communicate scientific observations to the Quality Team and use observation skills to identify trends and anomalies in the data
Tertiary education in Microbiology or Food Technology
3-5 years of working experience in a microbiological testing laboratory, ideally dairy industry, or short shelf life refrigerated products
Proven experience with performing microbiological testing of yeast/mould, TPC, coliform, antibiotic, and etc
Demonstrated knowledge of chemical testing of food products such as pH, solids, sensory
Ability to carry out microbiological testing with minimal supervision and confidently
Strong understanding and commitment to your own safety and that of others
Strong interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated commitment to teamwork and collaboration
Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy along with time management and organisational capacity
