Our client, Food and Nutrition Science and Technology Capability, a Division of the Department of Defence is based in beautiful Tasmania and boasts state of the art facilities including R&D and Manufacturing.

The Food and Nutrition Science and Technology Capability (FNSTC) within the Defence Science and Technology (DST) Group provides Defence with science and technology (S&T) advice and research in support of Defence fresh and combat ration feeding systems. It also manufactures a range of specialised foods for use in combat ration packs. This fantastic opportunity is available due to a staff member being promoted. The person in this role will be required to work 5 days a week until June 2019 to be reviewed for extension.



This role is a contract and will require the successful candidates to work five full days per week.

With tertiary qualifications such as Cert IV, Diploma or Bachelors Degree, you will need to conduct testing of various food products, provide technical support relating to general laboratory safety, housekeeping and assist with the quality assurance of ration pack components (food and packaging).

In summary, your duties will involve the provision of technical and professional support in the following areas:

  • Perform food testing and analysis such as compression testing, particle sizing and caking, water activity, pH, colour determination, insoluble residue, texture analysis and component testing
  • Setting-up, running, and adapting industry-established food testing methods to analyse specialised ration pack components as part of Defence’s Quality Assurance and Quality Evaluation programs.
  • Participate in food evaluation (sensory/taste panel) – voluntary basis
  • Maintain and calibrate equipment
  • Database management
  • Assist with writing and reviewing of Standard Operating Procedures, Risk Assessments and Work Instructions.
  • Support workplace health and safety
  • Be flexible and willing to work on a range of activities



The successful candidate must be flexible and willing to work on a range of activities in order that the work program is achieved both effectively and efficiently. The work force is small but a diverse range of work is performed.

You must be self-motivated to ensure efficient use of time. You will be willing to work within a team environment with varying degrees of individual effort depending on the task at hand.

willingness to share knowledge and provide support to other team members is an important element of the job.

To be considered for this position you must meet the following criteria:

  • You MUST BE an Australian citizen! PR IS NOT SUFFICIENT!
  • Have tertiary qualifications, Cert IV and above
  • Experience working in a laboratory in a QA/QC role would be highly regarded but not necessary
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as a team member or individually under general direction.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and a demonstrated ability to complete tasks on time.
  • Competence in the use of computers and computer software, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel, for the purposes of documenting SOPs, recording data and updating laboratory records.
  • Ability to operate computer controlled laboratory equipment.
  • Be willing to undergo an extensive background security check.
