The Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG ) is part of the Australian Department of Defence dedicated to providing science and technology support for Australia’s defence and national security needs. The Land Division of Defence Science and Technology Group (DST Group) manages and coordinates the provision of specialist training and operational support to Australian Defence Force elements for chemical, biological, radiological and/or nuclear (CBRN) defence.
The Land Division of Defence Science and Technology Group (DST Group) require an experienced Laboratory Chemist / Technician to support activities and programs of work focused on delivering specialist training to defence elements. In addition, you will assist with the long term research and development programs particularly with respect to the operation and maintenance of the instruments and equipment housed within the chemical analysis facility.
This is a contract role requiring the successful candidate to work 32 hours per week. It is anticipated that it will be commencing September 1, 2016 until 31 August 2017. At this time, the contract will be reviewed and may be extended to August 2019.

Some of the tasks associated with this role include:
Provision of laboratory technical support to the operation and maintenance of chemical laboratory instruments and associated equipment;
Setup, calibration and verification of laboratory instrumentation including several mass spectrometry systems which require ongoing calibration and technical assistance to maintain 24/7 readiness equipment used for experimentation and analysis
Assist with development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s)
Setup and clean-up of experiments for training activities;
Removal of waste chemicals/materials;
Collection of store solvents used in training-based activities; and
Assist with maintaining asset registers including stocktaking, and readiness of computer and communications-related equipment for use in exercises and operations
Apply and maintain credit card to assist with purchases used for experiments and other activities. This will also include raising purchase orders and reconciliation of credit card transactions.
Assist with purchasing and maintaining stock levels of glassware, chemicals, consumables and equipment
Coordination with Laboratory Managers (Officers In Charge) for laboratory/equipment availability
Report on a weekly basis to the Task Leader Special Operations
Engineer Regiment (SOER) to discuss priorities and provide update on progress
To be considered for this unique opportunity you MUST BE AN AUSTRALIAN CITIZEN and will need to meet the following criteria:
Tertiary qualifications Diploma up to an Honours Degree from an Australian Tertiary Institution (or equivalent) in the fields of Chemistry, Biochemistry or similar
Familiarity with National Association of Testing Authorities, ISO 17025 will be highly regarded
Experience calibrating Mass & Infrared Spectrometers
Experience in authoring SOPs
Demonstrated ability to conduct work with limited guidance and supervision.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills to present scientific results both orally and in written reports.
Demonstrated ability to comply with Work, Health and Safety policies.
Problem solving, innovative thinking and excellent attention to detail
Ability to multi-task and strong time management skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as a team member or autonomously.
Be adaptable and flexible to deal with a varying work load.
Great work ethic and reliability are essential for this busy role.
MUST be Willing to Undergo a Security Clearance.
