Our client is a high profile Australian company that has been involved in the research, development, manufacturing and distribution of high-quality personal care products for almost a century. With its state-of-the-art facilities, including R&D and QC laboratories overseen by a dedicated senior team, the company supplies products to major retailers within Australia and also more widely throughout the Asia-Pacific region.



Our client is looking to appoint a Junior Chemist within their R&D Team. You will be a degree-qualified chemist and preferably have a good understanding of emulsions—ideally within the context of the personal care industry. The position will also require you to develop a knowledge of formulation chemistry to include surfactants, rheology modifiers, and additives. 

In addition to performing industry-specific testing at the bench, you will gain proficiency in researching new technologies that facilitate the development of innovative products for clients, become able to identify new product opportunities and play a role in identifying process improvements and/or assist with cost reduction.

Following a period of initial training and with ongoing professional development, the entry-level role of Junior Chemist shall ultimately involve: –

  • Conducting routine testing of products and also tests in response to customer enquiries;
  • Undertaking in vitro testing relevant to the development of sun-protection products (e.g.: assessment of a product’s SPF, water resistance and photo-stability properties);
  • Providing troubleshooting support for the manufacturing department;
  • Researching new technologies and opportunities for new product development;
  • Participating in process and cost improvement measures;
  • Modifying formulations, product specifications and manufacturing procedures; and
  • Assisting in the maintenance and ongoing upkeep of the laboratory.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate they are organised, inquisitive, and tenacious.



In addition to truly being a team player, the ideal candidate will meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Science, preferably with a major in Chemistry;
  • Hands-on formulation experience involving surfactants, additives, and preservatives will be highly regarded;
  • Any post-graduation experience within a formulation role will be viewed favourably, especially if it is in the personal care industry;
  • You must possess excellent organisational skills, pay keen attention to detail, and a proven ability to manage multiple concurrent activities; and
  • Key to this role will be a flexible “can do” attitude, an excellent work ethic, and the ability to demonstrate your initiative.

This entry-level position is most certainly suitable for recent graduates, particularly those who may have accrued from several months’ to about a year’s relevant experience.
