The Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) is part of the Australian Department of Defence and dedicated to providing science and technology support for Australia’s defence and national security needs. DSTG is a national leader in safeguarding Australia by delivering valued scientific advice and innovative solutions.



DST Group requires a GC Chemist (graduates with some experience encouraged to apply) with Gas Chromatography experience to support their ongoing work programs within the Chemical Detection team. The work will initially involve the development and validation of the chemical delivery system, as well as assessments of handheld chemical detection equipment. The successful candidate will work in the Chemical Biological Protection and Detection Group, which is within the Land Division at the DST Group site located in the Fishermans Bend suburb of Melbourne.

Ultimately, the GC Chemist is required to assist with the testing process and provide analytical support concentrated on the Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Automated thermal desorption (ATD-GC) methodologies.

With a view to start in February 2021, this is a full-time contract role that is initially until February 2022. Under the terms of the contract with DST Group, there is the possibility for an extension of up to another 12 months, which could see the successful candidate providing the support to the group until February 2023. A successful candidate will have two options to choose from in terms of employment – a fixed-term tenure or on-hire basis employment which carries a loading. Please call to get more details.

Some of the tasks associated with this role include:

  • Collect, process and analyse samples using GC and associated equipment such as ATD-GC, GC-MS
  • Manage day to day operation, calibration, and maintenance of GC-MS, ATD-GC
  • Develop and write SOPs for instruments used during project work
  • Assist in the conducting of testing and the development of new test methods for Chemical Protective Clothing
  • Participate in the routine upkeep of the laboratory
  • Record all daily results correctly and efficiently in the laboratory book
  • Safely handle any of highly toxic materials under supervision; and
  • Assisting with data collection, processing, and report writing

The nature of this work shall require the successful candidate to undergo significant induction training, which will include the use and handling of different chemicals. And, when required by the activity, necessitate the wearing of a full-face respirator.

You will also need to meet the following criteria:

  • A relevant degree in the fields of Analytical Chemistry or similar
  • Relevant hands-on experience working in a chemistry laboratory with knowledge of GC instruments
  • Demonstrated experience with GC, GC-MS, ATD-GC including troubleshooting and basic maintenance of these instruments
  • Competence in the recording, processing, and presenting of data using Microsoft Office and other software packages as appropriate
  • Experience or solid understanding of MS and FTIR
  • MUST be Willing to Undergo a Baseline Security Clearance.
