The Defence Science and Technology Group (DST Group) is part of the Australian Department of Defence dedicated to providing science and technology support for Australia’s defence and national security needs.  DST Group is a national leader in safeguarding Australia by delivering valued scientific advice and innovative solutions for Defence and national security.

 

THE ROLE

DST Group requires an Analytical Scientist experienced in the use of FTIR for Gas Analysis to support their Gas Analysis for Battery Safety & Performance Research project. The successful candidate will work at DST’s state of the art R&D laboratories located at Fishermans Bend in Melbourne.

In this role you will be involved in an active research program investigating the safety and performance of a range of battery technologies, including commercial products and prototype technologies. These battery technologies are investigated to determine their suitability for, and any risks associated with, integration on Defence platforms or equipment.

This is a full-time contract role, working Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per day, for three years. There is also a possibility of two more 12 month  extensions.

Some of the tasks associated with this role include:

  • Support the DST Group research lead in the setup and operation of analysis equipment, conducting experiments and post processing of experimental data to report relevant outcomes to our client.
  • Maintain and operate existing FTIR equipment for gas analysis.
  • Develop appropriate WHS documentation for safe operation of equipment.
  • Process experimental data as directed by task lead.
  • Assist with clean-up and handling of hazardous waste as directed by task lead.
  • Identify and develop specifications for new research equipment in consultation with task lead.
  • Obtain quotations and procure new equipment as directed by task lead.
  • Support installation and configuration of new equipment as directed by task lead.
  • Conduct analysis on experimental data as directed by task lead; and
  • Write and publish reports, presentations, and research papers as directed by task lead.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

To be considered for this unique opportunity you MUST BE AN AUSTRALIAN CITIZEN and you must have experience in the use of FTIR for gas analysis.

Other requirements include:

  • A degree or higher in the fields of Chemistry, Materials Science or similar
  • Experience with operation of FTIR equipment, specifically for gas analysis
  • Experience with analysis of results from FTIR equipment
  • Understanding of applicable Work Health and Safety regulations
  • Experience in applied experimental techniques
  • Experience with battery research would be highly regarded
  • Problem-solving, innovative thinking and excellent attention to detail is a must
  • Ability to multi-task and strong time management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as a team member or autonomously
  • Be adaptable and flexible to deal with a varying workload
  • Great work ethic and reliability are essential for this busy role
  • MUST be Willing to Undergo a Security Clearance
