Our client, Food and Nutrition Science and Technology Capability, a Division of the Department of Defence is based in Scottsdale, in beautiful Tasmania and boasts state of the art facilities including R&D and Manufacturing.

The Food and Nutrition Science and Technology Capability (FNSTC) within the Defence Science and Technology (DST) Group provides Defence with science and technology (S&T) advice and research in support of Defence fresh and combat ration feeding systems. It also manufactures a range of specialised foods for use in combat ration packs.

Due to internal movement, our client requires two Food Technologists to join the Food Science team on contract.  



Working Monday to Friday, 7.5 hours per day, the aim of these two roles is to provide scientific input into Science & Technology/Research and Development activities.

The successful candidates must be flexible and willing to work on a range of activities in order that the work program is achieved both effectively and efficiently. This is important as the work force is small but a diverse range of work is performed.  We are looking for people that are self-motivated to ensure efficient use of their time.

These full-time contract positions will commence ASAP and will be due to complete in July and September this year, 2019. Based in Scottsdale, an hour’s drive from Launceston, you will be working with a friendly and caring group.

These two contract roles will provide scientific input into S&T/ Research & Development activities, the main body of work being focused on the quality assurance/evaluation program for ration pack components (food and packaging). This includes but is not limited the writing and reviewing of reports, food specifications and standards, and the provision of general support to science work programs and activities across the site.

The role involves working within a team environment with varying degrees of individual effort depending on the task at hand. A willingness to share knowledge and provide support to other team members is an important element of the job.

  • Hold tertiary qualifications in Nutrition, Food Technology or Chemistry or a related field
  • Ideally you will have started your career in either chemistry or nutrition and then moved into a food technology role or vice versa
  • Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • An ability to work as part of a team and individually under general direction
  • A demonstrated ability to work to deadlines and to successfully complete tasks on time
  • Experience in the use of Food Works and general computer software will be well regarded but not necessary
