The Defence Science and Technology Group is part of the Australian Department of Defence dedicated to providing science and technology support for Australia’s defence and national security needs. DST Group is a national leader in safeguarding Australia by delivering valued scientific advice and innovative solutions for Defence and national security.


DST Group’s Land Division requires an experienced Scientist / Molecular Biologist with some familiarity of next-generation sequencing platforms. The successful candidate will provide molecular biology support within the Chemical and Biological Agent Detection and Protection Group, which is located at DST Group’s Fishermans Bend site in Melbourne.

The Biological Agent Team conducts research and provides advice to the Australian Defence Force (ADF) regarding the detection of biological agents. Specifically, the team is developing methods utilising next-generation DNA sequencing technology to detect and identify biological agents in a variety of samples.

This team’s work involves the development of DNA extraction and amplification methods from both clinical and environmental samples. The program is being conducted in collaboration with academia and international defence organisations with the information it produces assisting the ADF to make timely and actionable decisions.

This is a full-time contract role that will commence on 19 November 2018 and is initially until 18 May 2019. Under the terms of the contract with DST Group there is the possibility for two extensions, each being for up to 12 months, which could see the successful candidate providing molecular biology support until 18 May 2021.

The successful candidate shall undertake work that includes, but is not limited to:

  • RNA/DNA extractions;
  • RNA/DNA quality analysis and quantification;
  • cDNA preparations;
  • Amplification of DNA/cDNA;
  • Library preparation for next-generation sequencing (NGS);
  • Sequencing operations using Illumina MiSeq/ONT MinION; and
  • Recording and reporting results.


To be considered for this opportunity you MUST BE AN AUSTRALIAN CITIZEN and also be prepared to undergo AGSVA screening to obtain your Baseline Security Clearance.

Additionally, shortlisted candidates will have ensured they address the following selection criteria:

  • Hold a bachelor degree from an Australian Tertiary Institution in the field of Molecular Biology or a similar/higher qualification with an equivalent major
  • Possess practical experience in current molecular biology techniques (i.e., DNA extractions, purification, quality assessment and quantification)
  • Demonstrated PCR skills and some sequencing experience, ideally NGS
  • Previous experience working with RNA would be considered advantageous
  • Excellent ability to keep legible notes relating to sample results and maintain adequate records within a lab book
  • Track record of complying with Work, Health and Safety policies, especially those relating to the handling of biological materials
  • Availability to commence work in mid-November and ability to commit to the duration of the contract, including extensions
