Our client is an agency of the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment.  It was established in 1993 to centralise the registration of all agricultural and veterinary chemical (agvet) products into the Australian marketplace.

The registration process involves scientifically evaluating the safety and efficacy of a product in order to protect the health and safety of people, animals, plants and the environment.



Opportunities such as this are rare! One of Australia’s key regulatory authorities is hiring an Executive Director, Registration Management and Evaluation to join the Senior Leadership team in Armidale, a regional city in Northern New South Wales.

This Executive Director role is available due to a retirement within the Agency and will be at the Senior Executive Band 1 Level.

Reporting to the CEO, the Executive Director will be responsible for the Registration Management and Evaluation Program. This includes product registration and permits for the approval of veterinary medicines and pesticides.

Working within established legislative and policy frameworks, the Executive Director is required to provide significant and detailed guidance on issues related to the assessment of applications, and address stakeholder concerns in relation to complex and sensitive matters associated with such evaluations.

Working with a high level of autonomy, the Executive Director is required to make sound decisions on issues that may significantly impact on the Authority, based on professional judgement, evaluating risks in the context of a complex regulatory environment.

The Executive Director will also manage relationships with external service providers, internal and external clients and stakeholders, including commonwealth, state and industry bodies and non-government organisations.



To be successful in your application, you need to meet the following criteria:

  • Doctorate level qualifications highly desirable in a relevant scientific discipline such as agricultural science; horticultural science; veterinary medicine; toxicology; biotechnology; plant pathology; entomology; veterinary pharmacology and therapeutics; pharmaceutical science; microbiology; or chemical regulation
  • Substantial experience (>10 years) as a leader of a diverse team of specialist scientific staff across multiple locations, preferably in a regulatory environment
  • Resilient, confident scientific leader with demonstrated experience in building and sustaining relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated experience in summarising complex scientific material from multiple sources to produce concise advice on complex, technical regulatory decisions that may be controversial in nature
  • Excellent people and negotiation skills, highly developed communication skills and the ability to work collegiately with a broad range of stakeholders from industry, government and the wider community
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver government objectives and solve highly complex and high-profile issues including in relation to contentious scientific subject matter
  • Proven experience in providing sound advice on potentially sensitive issues with diplomacy and tact, and in identifying and addressing potential risks to business operations and the reputation of the agency
  • Experience in monitoring and reviewing regulatory systems and processes to ensure they are efficient, effective, and responsive to changing markets
  • A strong understanding of public administration with a particular focus on sound financial management and governance practices in public service.
  • The ability to represent the Authority in a range of forums
