CLIENT

The Defence Science and Technology (DST) is part of the Australian Department of Defence dedicated to providing science and technology support for Australia’s defence and national security needs. In its position as the second-largest public-funded R&D organisation in Australia, DST is a national leader in safeguarding Australia by delivering valued scientific advice and innovative solutions for Defence and national security.

The Explosives and Pyrotechnics (EP) group develops the necessary science and technology (S&T) in relation to energetic materials, energetic systems, and energetic effects (i.e., energetics), which are the basis for Explosive Ordnance (EO).  Within the EP group, the Advanced Propulsion and Weapon Effects (APWE) Branch conducts fundamental and applied research in that includes processing, development, and testing of new propellant and explosive materials for Defence applications.

 

ROLES

Based in its Edinburgh site in Adelaide, there are three full-time positions (each working an average of 37.5 hours per week) for a project leading to the development and manufacture of explosive ordnance. The initial engagement on the project shall be under a nine-month contract and DST provides provision for an extension of up to 12 months, which could see work continuing through until mid-2022.

CS Executive Group can offer employment under a fixed-term tenure, which includes paid annual leave, sick leave, and public holidays. Alternatively, if you opt to forgo those benefits, we can engage you on a contract based solely on hours worked that affords a higher hourly rate of pay in accordance with casual employment terms.

 

Here is DST’s summary for each of the project-related positions: –

Senior Practitioner – Energetic Materials

  • under direction, manufacture propellant and explosive formulations;
  • undertake laboratory testing on a range of formulations, so as to characterise chemical and mechanical properties;
  • perform test data analysis;
  • assist with the development of test methodologies; and
  • prepare risk assessments and standard operating procedures for facilities and processes

 

Practitioner – Energetic Materials

  • assist with manufacturing propellant and explosive formulations; and
  • undertake analytical/laboratory testing on formulations, so as to characterise chemical, sensitiveness and mechanical properties

 

Practitioner – Trials Management

  • testing on a range of propellants and explosive ordnance to characterise performance, safety and effects;
  • provide trials instrumentation and data acquisition support;
  • assist with the development of test methodologies;
  • prepare risk assessments and standard operating procedures for facilities and processes; and
  • assist with experimental design and instrumentation.

 

Additionally, all of the above roles shall are required to:

  • upkeep of manufacture and test facilities;
  • liaise with workshop staff where their involvement is necessary for preparing hardware and materials for manufacture/testing; and
  • provide additional technical support when required by Task Leader or Group Leader

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

To be successful in your application you must meet the following criteria:

  • Australian Citizenship—this is a mandatory requirement, as befits the nature DST’s project work;
  • Science-based diploma or degree, ideally in chemistry or chemical engineering;
  • Proven ability to work cooperatively in a small team, liaise and communicate effectively;
  • Demonstrated competence in the safe handling of hazardous chemicals, specifically techniques relevant to manufacturing/testing energetic material;
  • Oral and written communication skills of a high standard;
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to WHS in technical laboratories and/or field trials;
  • Must be willing to undergo the necessary security vetting to obtain a SECRET clearance level; and
  • If you are not based in Adelaide, you must be willing to relocate there at your own expense
