THE CLIENT

Our client is an agency in the portfolio of the Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia.  It is responsible for the assessment of the human safety and trade risk aspects of applications for the registration of agricultural and veterinary chemical products, approval of permits to use a chemical for a specific purpose, or the review of existing chemical products and uses.

 

THE OPPORTUNITY

Based in graphic Armidale in regional NSW, this role can be offered under various employment options, ideally as a permanent ongoing position, or on a fixed-term tenure of up to three years.

Reporting to the Deputy CEO, this Executive Director role is available due to an internal promotion within the Agency.

 

THE POSITION

As a regulator, the Authority is publicly accountable for the quality and consistency of its registration decisions. The Risk Assessment Capability Program is responsible for:

  • ensuring the evaluation of the scientific components of product applications assessed by the Authority are based on contemporary tools, standards and approaches;
  • ensuring a consistent and transparent risk assessment process is applied to all scientific decisions; and
  • the chemical review program, which considers new information on products already approved to ensure they can continue to be used safely and effectively.

Working in close partnership with the Deputy CEO and other Executives within the Authority, the successful candidate will provide scientific leadership to ensure that scientific expertise, risk management, planning, policies and systems enhance the Authority’s decision-making capability and capacity.

 

REQUIREMENTS

The successful applicant must be a resilient, confident scientific leader with demonstrated experience in building and sustaining relationships with key internal and external stakeholders. An effective communicator, you will work constructively with industry and government (Federal and State) and articulate the reasons behind regulatory decisions.

Ideally, you will have a thorough understanding of the Authority’s legislative and regulatory environment and the technical capability to ensure you perform the role of being the ‘ultimate’ peer reviewer of all undertaken scientific assessments.

To be successful in your application, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Significant experience as a leader who is able to encourage a diverse team of specialist staff to constantly pursue excellence, preferably in a regulatory environment
  • The ability to pragmatically engage with risk to deliver government objectives and solve highly complex and high-profile issues whilst remaining client focussed
  • Excellent people and negotiation skills, highly developed communication skills and the ability to work collegiately with a broad range of stakeholders from industry, government and the wider community
  • Experience in summarising complex scientific material from multiple sources to produce concise advice on complex, technical regulatory decisions that may be controversial in nature
  • Proven experience in providing sound advice on potentially sensitive issues with diplomacy and tact, and in identifying and addressing potential risks to business operations
  • Proven experience in monitoring and reviewing regulatory systems and processes to ensure they are efficient, effective, responsive to changing markets and do not impose unnecessary costs on regulated entities
  • Doctorate level qualifications highly desirable in a relevant scientific discipline
  • To be eligible for this role, you MUST be an Australian Citizen
