CLIENT

Our client is an Australian government statutory authority based in Canberra. It applies scientific expertise to evaluate and register all pesticides and veterinary medicines, support Australian agricultural and livestock industries and protect the health and safety of people, animals, the environment and Australia’s overseas trade.

 

THE ROLE

Our client requires a Chemistry Evaluator to assist with an increased workload associated with Chemical review work at either the APS6 or EL1 levels, depending on skills, abilities and qualifications. Evaluators are expected to conduct work in a manner displaying a high level of discretion and integrity consistent with relevant policies and legislation. Representation, liaison and client responsiveness are critical to this position.

The core functions of Chemistry Evaluators (APS6) include:

  • Evaluation of scientific data (including manufacturing and quality control processes for both active constituents and formulated products, physicochemical properties of active constituents, specifications for chemical constituents, formulated products and packaging, stability data for shelf life determination, and analytical methodology).
  • Applying principles of risk assessment to make recommendations based on sound science and good judgment within the regulatory framework of the Agency.
  • Prepare and present evaluation reports and related correspondence that require limited editing, particularly as more experience is gained. Reports are completed within agreed timeframes. May represent the Chemistry Section on technical matters including liaison with industry and other areas of the Agency.
  • Provide advice on chemistry matters to applicants and other areas of the Agency when required.
  • Undertake project work relating to the Chemistry section and other  programs as required.
  • May assist in the development and maintenance of processes, standards and guidance material relating to the approval of active constituents and the evaluation of agricultural and veterinary chemical products.

 

Chemistry Evaluators (EL1) will evaluate complex and difficult applications. Core duties include:

  • Evaluation of scientific data (including manufacturing and quality control processes for both active constituents and formulated products, physicochemical properties of active constituents, specifications for chemical constituents, formulated products and packaging, stability data for shelf life determination, and analytical methodology).
  • Applying principles of risk assessment to make recommendations based on sound science and good judgment within the regulatory framework of the Agency.
  • Prepare and present evaluation reports and related correspondence that require minimal editing and are completed within agreed timeframes.
  • Undertake preliminary peer review of technical reports generated by Chemistry Evaluators and take responsibility of the quality of such reports.
  • Training, mentoring and some day to day supervision of staff.
  • Represent the Chemistry Section on technical matters including liaison with industry and other areas of the Agency.
  • Provide advice on chemistry matters to applicants and other areas of the Department when required.
  • Undertake project work relating to the Chemistry section and other programs as required.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of processes, standards and guidance material relating to the approval of active constituents and the evaluation of agricultural and veterinary chemical products.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

To be successful in your application you will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Postgraduate qualifications in Chemistry or related discipline is highly desirable as is experience in formulation chemistry and/or trace level analytical methods.
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience in the interpretation and evaluation of scientific data and information pertaining to chemistry and manufacturing technology of chemicals
  • Ability to solve problems, pay attention to detail, makes decisions based on sound science and risk analysis and demonstrates capacity to negotiate persuasively and confidently
  • Ability to apply an appropriate level of risk using common sense assessment principles and to analyse and evaluate complex scientific and technical information and to provide well thought out advice on the interpretation of data, scientific reports, policies and procedures within a regulatory framework
  • Highly developed planning, organisational skills in a team including the ability to determine own workflow priorities and assume responsibility for delivery of organisational goals while maintaining a focus on quality
  • Highly developed critical thinking, analysis, discretion and change management skills to maintain focus on achieving key organisational outcomes
  • A high level of written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills that can be applied to the preparation of a range of written documents and reports including liaising with clients, staff and service providers to establish and maintain internal and external networks and to represent the Agency in a variety of forums
  • To be selected for this role you must be an Australian citizen and be willing to undergo security clearance.
