Our client, Food and Nutrition Science and Technology Capability, a Division of the Department of Defence is based in beautiful Tasmania and boasts state of the art facilities including R&D and Manufacturing.

The Food and Nutrition Science and Technology Capability (FNSTC) within the Defence Science and Technology (DST) Group provides Defence with science and technology (S&T) advice and research in support of Defence fresh and combat ration feeding systems. It also manufactures a range of specialised foods for use in combat ration packs. Due to the amount of work available, they are in need of a Quality Systems Operator to join their Food Science team.

This role is part-time and will require the successful candidate to work approximately 52.5 hours a fortnight. (Seven days a fortnight – 3 days one week and 4 days the next). It is initially a three year contract, up to 2019, that may be extended for a further two periods of 12 months or parts thereof.

The successful candidate will provide technical and professional support to S&T / Research & Development activities, within the quality assurance program for ration pack components (food and packaging), and within new product development and research projects as part of the Centre for Food Innovation.

The tasks include but are not limited to food analysis, reviewing and authoring laboratory supporting documentation (WHS Audits, risk assessments, standard operating procedures and work instructions) and provide general support to work programs and activities across the site. Method development may also be required.

Some of the duties associated with this role include:

  • performing food testing and analysis, currently including rancidity testing and resistant starch analysis
  • data entry and analysis
  • contributing to writing and reviewing of standard operating procedures, work instructions and risk assessments
  • assisting with the writing and review of food specifications and technical reports
  • performing instrument calibration and maintenance, preparation of reagents, general laboratory housekeeping
  • providing support to the chemistry laboratory Officer In Charge
  • preparation, execution and finalisation activities in support of field work
  • participate in food evaluation (sensory/taste panel) activities (voluntary basis)
  • supporting workplace health and safety requirements

To be considered for this position you must meet the following criteria:

  • You MUST BE an Australian citizen! PR IS NOT SUFFICIENT!
  • Tertiary qualifications in Chemistry or similar
  • Experience conducting chemical testing of various food products would be highly regarded
  • Experience calibrating and maintaining analytical instrumentation
  • Experience writing and reviewing standard operating procedures, work instructions and risk assessments
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as a team member or individually under general direction.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and a demonstrated ability to complete tasks on time.
  • Competence in the use of computers and computer software, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel, for the purposes of recording data and updating laboratory records.
  • Be willing to undergo background security check
