Our client, a well known government agency based in Melbourne, is currently looking for a Chemist/Occupational Hygienist, with knowledge of WHS compliance of chemicals and a strong understanding of legislation around the storage and use of Hazardous Chemicals to work in the Specialised Coatings Technology Team.



With tertiary qualifications up to the level of PhD, you will be responsible for managing the chemical holdings of the Group.

In summary your duties will involve being responsible for the following activities:

  • Stocktake of hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals
  • Manage the Defence ChemAlert Database
  • Correct Storage of Dangerous Goods
  • Correct disposal of unwanted Hazardous Chemicals
  • Compliance of labelling chemicals and maintaining SDS
  • Induction of new chemical purchased by the Group
  • Prepare Hazardous Substance Risk Assessments for new chemicals
  • Prepare WHS documentation
  • Be trained to handle highly toxic materials
  • Participate in WHS meeting

*You must be willing to undertake an extensive background security check.

This is a contract position for the duration of 7 months, until June 2016, with the possibility of extension for a further 12 months.

You must be available to start work early December 2015.



To be considered for this position you must meet the following criteria:

  • You MUST BE an Australian Citizen! PR IS NOT SUFFICIENT
  • Have tertiary qualifications such as a PhD or lower – degree minimum in Chemistry or Occupational Hygiene
  • At least four years experience working within a Laboratory Environment with hazardous chemicals
  • Experience managing WHS compliance of chemicals (including GHS) is a must
  • Understanding of Commonwealth and Victorian WHS legislation around the storage and use of Hazardous Chemicals and Dangerous Goods would be highly regarded
  • Familiarity working with ChemAlert database would be well regarded
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as a team member or individually under general direction.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to write reports
