The Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) is part of the Australian Department of Defence and dedicated to providing science and technology support for Australia’s defence and national security needs. DSTG is a national leader in safeguarding Australia by delivering valued scientific advice and innovative solutions.



This is a full-time role for the duration of a project due to commence in mid-December 2019 and is expected to be completed within three years. The benefits of securing this fixed-term tenure through CS Executive Group include being paid annual leave, sick leave and public holidays.

DSTG requires a Chemical Sciences Specialist to contribute towards the project goals of the Hazard Management Team, which has expertise in the properties, synthesis, and analysis of chemical warfare agents. The work will involve undertaking testing and evaluation of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) decontaminants against a range of chemical warfare agents and related materials, serving to inform Australian Defence Force capability. The successful candidate will conduct work in several ongoing programs in the Chemical and Biological Defence (CBD) MSTC (Major Science and Technology Capability), which are activities performed in Melbourne at DSTG’s Fishermans Bend site.

Ultimately, the Chemical Sciences Specialist will assist in the provision of advice to the group on the performance of their defence equipment.

Some of the tasks associated with this role include:

  • Contributing to activities involving the testing and evaluation of decontaminants against a range of toxic materials, which involves performing general laboratory wet chemistry and extraction techniques;
  • Assisting with the designing and construction of MSTC’s new decontamination Test Rig;
  • Preparing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the various methods, tests & evaluations (T&E) and analytical techniques utilised by the Team;
  • Reviewing and updating documentation of the sample preparation methods, as well as the validation/verification processes for the instruments used;
  • Ensuring the compliance status of the laboratory’s instrumentation (e.g., GC/MS & LC/MS) through monitoring calibration checks of lab equipment, conducting calibration/repeatability checks, and liaising with external service providers when required;
  • Addressing compliance issues that arise and facilitating the appropriate corrective actions;
  • Appropriately handling highly toxic materials within a laboratory setting; and
  • Assisting with testing and development of prototype chemical detectors.

The nature of this project-based work shall necessitate the successful candidate being comfortable wearing additional personal protective equipment (PPE) based upon the task being undertaken.

You will also need to meet the following criteria:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s or honours degree in Analytical Chemistry or an equivalent subject;
  • Substantial hands-on experience working in a chemistry laboratory, preferably with some relevance to DSTG’s project work on toxic chemicals;
  • Demonstrated experience with GC/MS & LC/MS, including troubleshooting and basic maintenance of the instrumentation;
  • Competence in the recording, processing, and presenting of data using Microsoft Office and other software packages as appropriate;
  • Experience with the handling of hazardous and Dangerous Goods chemicals, which includes correct storage and disposal; and
  • MUST be Willing to Undergo Negative Vetting Security Clearance.
