Our client is a Federal Government Department in Canberra.

The Chemical Assessments Section (CAS) of this Australian Government Department is contracted by two of Australia’s chemical regulators to provide environmental risk assessments and advice on chemicals. Due to a high workload, our client currently has the need for qualified professionals to join their team for an initial six-month contract which may be reviewed for extension.



The Chemical Assessments Section does not operate a laboratory. The Assessors combine industry submitted data (test reports), in-house sourced and/or generated (Q)SAR modelled data, and their expert knowledge of chemistry (and related disciplines) to assess the level of risk to the environment posed by a chemical.

This role will require you to work Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week. Successful candidates will have a strong chemistry / environmental science background. Industry experience will be highly regarded but is not necessary.

In this position you will undertake urgent specialised work in relation to the environmental risk assessment of new and existing industrial chemicals. You will provide technical advice to the Department on the hazards and risks of chemicals including nanotechnology to the environment. You will also contribute to national standards for the environmental risk assessment of chemicals.

In summary, your duties will include the following:

  • Conduct environmental risk analyses of large numbers of chemical substances according to standardised assessment methods
  • Reliably use computational environmental hazard evaluation techniques for chemical substances under limited supervision
  • Assist senior staff to develop new innovative methods to efficiently organize and analyse large volumes of electronic chemical information
  • Provide clearly written reports summarising complex technical information and provide clear verbal briefings to supervising staff



Successful candidates will meet the following criteria:

  • A good level of education such as BSc (Honours), MSc or a PhD in Chemistry or a closely related discipline including Biochemistry or Ecotoxicology;
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience or aptitude for working in teams to demanding timelines
  • A high level of personal motivation and a strong commitment to learning and improvement
  • Demonstrated ability to retrieve and analyse scientific information on chemicals from a variety of sources and prepare related reports
  • Exceptional organisational skills, including demonstrated capacity to meet tight deadlines and to manage multiple and competing priorities
  • Ability to liaise effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Be adaptable and flexible to deal with a varying work load
  • Great work ethic, reliability and a good eye for detail are essential for this busy role.

Experience in chemical risk assessment would be advantageous, however, we also encourage recent graduates/post graduates to apply.

Knowledge and experience in applying scientific principles to hazard, exposure and risk assessment and knowledge of the regulation of chemicals in Australia will be highly regarded.
