Unique opportunity to join a Government Department in Canberra to assist and carry out Risk Assessments of new Industrial Chemicals.Something that happens all the time, however few of us get an opportunity to be part of the process. Due to a high workload, our client currently has the need for two qualified professionals to join their team for an initial six-month contract which may be reviewed for extension. Successful candidates will have a strong chemistry / environmental science background.Industry experience will be highly regarded but is not necessary. This role will require you to work Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week, at the APS 5 Level.


In this position you will undertake urgent specialised work in relation to the environmental risk assessment of new and existing industrial chemicals. You will provide technical advice to the Department (policy, international conventions, coal seam gas) on the hazards and risks of chemicals including nanotechnology to the environment. You will also contribute to national standards for the environmental risk assessment of chemicals.


Other duties associated with this role will include:

  • Undertaking research to conduct environmental risk assessment of chemical substances under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Conducting environmental risk analyses of large numbers of chemical substances according to standardised assessment methods.
  • The use of computational environmental hazard evaluation techniques for chemical substances under limited supervision once trained.
  • Assisting senior staff to develop new innovative methods to efficiently organize and analyse large volumes of electronic chemical information.
  • The provision of clearly written reports summarising complex technical information and clear verbal briefings to supervising staff.
  • The undertaking of environmental risk assessment-related projects and administration as required.



Successful candidates will hold a BSc (Honours), MSc or a PhD in Chemistry or Environmental Science.

Candidates with experience in chemical risk assessment would be an advantage, however, we also encourage recent graduates/post graduates to apply as training will be provided.

Ideally, you will have knowledge and experience in applying scientific principles to hazard, exposure and risk assessment and knowledge of the regulation of chemicals in Australia.

  • Ability to liaise effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Be adaptable and flexible to deal with a varying work load.
  • Great work ethic, reliability and a good eye for detail are essential for this busy role.
