Our client, operates a drug testing laboratory which specialises in the detection of drugs and related substances in biological fluids such as blood and urine.  It also provides a drug testing service to Industry in the areas of human workplace and OH&S.



Due to an internal movement, there is an opportunity for an early career biochemist/chemist to undertake a combination of high-throughput drug screening and method development in a laboratory that specialises in the detection of protein and peptide-based drugs in biological fluids.

Due to the hybrid nature of this analysis, methods span a wide range of different techniques from:

  • LC/MS/MS on triple quadrupole mass spectrometers
  • Solid phase extraction
  • Automated liquid handling robots
  • 96-well plate based immunoassays
  • Quantitative PCR

Some of the responsibilities of the role include:

  • Assisting in the development of methods for determination of peptides and proteins in biological fluids by adapting existing methodologies for robust routine analysis
  • Monitoring the development of new protein-based drugs and develop methods for their detection
  • Identifying proteins and peptides in materials which have been illegally obtained or imported
  • Maintaining inventory stock
  • Collaborating with senior staff on rapid substance identification and analytical method development to combat the use of new drugs
  • Performing routine analysis of samples.

To be considered for this role you must meet the following criteria:

  • Bachelor or Higher Degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry or related discipline
  • LCMS  experience is a must
  • A sound knowledge of SPE techniques, PCR and related instrumentation would be well regarded but not a must.
  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in a related field
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good problem-solving skills, innovative thinking and attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task and strong time management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as a team member or autonomously
  • Be adaptable and flexible to deal with a varying workload
  • Great work ethic and reliability are essential for this busy role.
