CLIENT

Our client is the Defence Science and Technology Group, part of Australia’s Department of Defence. It is the second largest public-funded R&D organisation in Australia and a national leader in safeguarding Australia by delivering valued scientific advice and innovative solutions for Defence and national security.

 

THE ROLE

DSTG-Land Division has an environmental test facility which conducts vapour systems tests for military personal protective suits and equipment ensembles.

There is a current need for a scientist with analytical chemistry skills to join this group on a contract basis. With tertiary qualifications in Chemistry or related field, you will need to provide technical support for the operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments. Experience with HPLC is a must to this role whilst some working knowledge of Gas Chromatography will be well regarded.

In summary your duties will involve the provision of technical and professional support in the following areas:

  • Assist with the calibration, verification and day to day operation of HPLC and similar laboratory equipment
  • Calibration and verification of MIRAN (a gas analyser utilising IR spectroscopy)
  • Calibration, verification and day-to-day operation of a Thermal Desorption – GC and associated equipment
  • Provide data on vapour systems testing in a form suitable for inclusion in validation reports
  • Provide data on adsorbent testing in a form suitable for inclusion in report/s
  • Manual handling of equipment
  • Assist with data collection and storage
  • Assist with testing of absorbent materials

This contract is initially for 12 months and may be extended.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

To be considered for this position you must meet the following criteria:

  • You MUST BE an Australian citizen! PR IS NOT SUFFICIENT
  • Have tertiary qualifications such as a Bachelor of Science – Honours or Masters would be well regarded.
  • Excellent analytical chemistry skills especially in HPLC
  • Good working knowledge, method development, Calibrations and Validation of HPLC (GC and IR knowledge will be well regarded)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as a team member or individually under general direction
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and a demonstrated ability to complete tasks on time
  • Competence in the use of computers and computer software, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel, for the purposes of documenting SOPs, recording data and updating laboratory records
  • Ability to operate computer controlled laboratory equipment
