Our client is the Defence Science and Technology Group, part of Australia’s Department of Defence. It is the second largest public-funded R&D organisation in Australia and a national leader in safeguarding Australia by delivering valued scientific advice and innovative solutions for Defence and national security.

The Weapons Propulsion Group of Weapons and Combat Systems Division which is based in Adelaide conducts research into gun propellant degradation. To support this research, a chemical testing laboratory provides the appropriate analytical services.



There is a current need for a scientist with analytical chemistry skills to join The laboratory team on a contract basis.

This is an entry level role requiring one to three years experience. With tertiary qualifications in Chemistry or a related field, the successful candidate will provide analytical chemistry support to research work, and in particular with instruments such as HPLC, GC, GPC and various thermal instruments including calorimetry.

In summary, your duties will include the following:

  • Day to day operation of HPLCs including calibration, method development and validation
  • Provide analytical data in support of current research programmes, across additional instrumentation such as GC, GPC (Gel Permeation Chromatography) and various thermal instruments including a microcalorimeter
  • Manual handling of scientific equipment, including set-up and routine maintenance
  • Troubleshoot problems with analyses and instruments, manage instrument maintenance contracts, and ensure the laboratory is stocked with consumables
  • Ensure compliance documentation required for the operation of the laboratory is in place and current

This contract is initially for ONE YEAR and subject to approval by the Commonwealth and satisfactory performance will be extended annually up until JUNE 2022.



To be considered for this position you must meet the following criteria:

  • You MUST BE an Australian citizen! PR IS NOT SUFFICIENT
  • Have tertiary qualifications in chemistry or similar with a few years of experience in a chemical laboratory
  • Excellent analytical chemistry skills
  • Good HPLC operational knowledge, including Calibrations, Method Development and Validation 
  • Competence in the use of Chemical laboratory instruments
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as a team member or individually under general direction
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and a demonstrated ability to complete tasks on time
  • Ability to operate computer-controlled laboratory equipment
  • Be willing to undergo high level security clearance
  • Prior experience in a NATA Chemical laboratory and knowledge of ISO17025 will be highly regarded.
