The Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) is part of the Australian Department of Defence dedicated to providing science and technology support for Australia’s defence and national security needs.  DST Group is a national leader in safeguarding Australia by delivering valued scientific advice and innovative solutions for Defence and national security.


DSTG’s Fuels Team perform bespoke applied fuel research programs, which support the Department of Defence’s agenda and ensure the integrity of its fuels continue to support the ADF’s array of military vehicles. The team has a project-based need for an experienced Fuels Chemist with analytical chemistry skills to a scientist. The successful candidate will perform work for the Fuels Services Branch (FSB) within the fuels and lubricants testing laboratory at DSTG’s Fishermans Bend site in Melbourne.

Whilst starting shall be subject to being granted the necessary baseline clearance by AGSVA, the initial contract period will be until 2 July 2021 and then DSTG has the option to extend this period by up to 12 months. The position is  (i.e., 0.8 FTE).

Alternatively, if you opt to forgo those benefits, we can engage you on a contract based solely on hours worked that affords a higher hourly rate of pay in accordance with casual employment terms.

With tertiary qualifications in chemistry, you will need to have a comprehensive understanding of Work Health and Safety (WHS) requirements for working in a chemical laboratory and specific experience from working in a fuels laboratory. DSTG will not be providing additional training. Therefore, you must be completely capable of performing complex analytical chemistry tasks and be competent in the operation of all relevant laboratory equipment.

In summary, your duties will involve the provision of technical and professional support in the following areas:

  • Complex fieldwork on Australian Defence Force (ADF) fuel and lubricant systems;
  • Analytical support to Aerospace Division fuels work programs;
  • Project work on degradation and technical integrity of fuels; and
  • Provision of a laboratory capable of conducting applied fuel research.

The outcomes of your work will be used to provide written reports to fulfil the ongoing requirements of DSTG’s fuel research activities.


To be considered for this unique opportunity you MUST BE AN AUSTRALIAN CITIZEN and will also need to meet the following criteria:

  • Degree in Chemical Science;
  • Highly skilled experienced fuels chemist;
  • Comprehensive understanding of working safely in a fuels laboratory environment;
  • Demonstrated competent operation of Agilent GCMS, GC-AED, HPLC & FTIR systems, which extends to the skills necessary to develop methods;
  • Demonstrated operation of complex fuels-related analytical equipment (e.g., JFTOT, BOCLE freeze point, and distillation equipment);
  • Technical report writing experience; and
  • MUST be Willing to Undergo a Security Clearance.

Whilst work will primarily be conducted at the Fishermans Bend site, DST may occasionally require other working arrangements to meet requirements of its fuel-related projects.
