Our client is the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), part of Australia’s Department of Defence. It is the second largest public-funded R&D organisation in Australia and a national leader in safeguarding Australia by delivering valued scientific advice and innovative solutions for Defence and National Security.



DSTG – Fuels Group undertake a range of fuel chemistry applied research programs in support of the Department of Defence’s agenda.

There is a current need for a scientist with analytical chemistry skills to join this group on a fixed term contract basis as maternity cover until 30th June 2018.  With tertiary qualifications in Chemistry or related field, you will need to provide chemical and analytical support to fuels and hydrocarbon related applied research projects. Operational experience with HPLC, GCMS and JFTOT is a must for this role whilst working in a Fuels Laboratory.

In summary your duties will involve the provision of technical and professional support in the following areas:

  • Analytical work program for Australian Defence Fuels team
  • Project work on degradation of fuels
  • Complex field work on ADF fuel and lubricant systems
  • Appropriate reporting of the work, including written reports at project completion
  • Monthly updates and briefings on applied research projects
  • Laboratory analytical reports for each specific analytical project.

This contract is to cover a maternity leave position from August 2017 until 30th June 2018.



To be considered for this position you must meet the following criteria

  • You MUST BE an Australian citizen! PR IS NOT SUFFICIENT
  • Have tertiary qualifications such as a Bachelor of Science – Honours or Masters would be well regarded
  • Direct hands-on experience in a fuels chemistry laboratory under strict OH&S standards
  • Operational experience with HPLC, GCMS and JFTOT is a must
  • Excellent analytical chemistry skills especially in provision of non-routine samples
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as a team member or individually under general direction
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and a demonstrated ability to complete tasks on time
  • Competence in the use of computers and computer software, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel, for the recording and reporting of data and scientific results
