CLIENT

Our client is a NATA accredited laboratory that provides a drug testing service to industry both within Australia and Internationally. Based near Melbourne’s CBD, they are world renowned for their research and testing capabilities.

Our client specializes in the detection of drugs and related substances in biological fluids, such as blood and urine. Due to growth, this busy laboratory is looking to employ an Analytical Chemist to perform analyses by GCMS and LCMS.

The role will initially be under a fixed-term contract for 12 months.

 

ROLE

The role of an Analytical Chemist is to carry out drug screening of biological samples and then, where necessary, perform confirmatory analyses of samples returning positive results for target compounds.

Under an initial contract of one year, our client is looking for person with initiative, a keen eye for detail, who has excellent time management, multi-tasking and communication skills, is a team player and who is ready to embark on their career. Whilst not a prerequisite, some experience of mass spectrometry techniques operated in combination with gas and/or liquid chromatography would be considered advantageous.

This role is perfect for a recent graduate willing to learn analytical chemistry techniques at the cutting edge in a state-of-the-art laboratory.

You will be required to:

  • Run a variety of drug screens using methods that employ both GCMS & LCMS
  • Accurately check data produced by these methods and then, as required, make recommendations for further investigation
  • Liaise closely with other team members to ensure all work is completed accurately and efficiently
  • Perform both qualitative and quantitative confirmatory analysis of suspected drug positives in samples
  • Conduct regular maintenance of analytical systems to ensure ongoing performance to acceptance criteria

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

To be considered as a candidate for this 12-month contract you will meet the following criteria:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree majoring in Chemistry or related discipline, preferably with honours
  • Applicants from recent graduates with up to 3 years’ experience* of LCMS and/or GCMS in industry are encouraged
  • An understanding of solid-phase extraction is considered advantageous
  • Problem solving, innovative thinking and excellent attention to detail is a must
  • A proven ability to multi-task efficiently shall underpin your confidence in possessing demonstrable time management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, affording you the capability to work autonomously or as a member of a team
  • Be adaptable and flexible to deal with a varying work load
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Great work ethic and reliability are essential for this busy role
