The Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) is part of the Australian Department of Defence and dedicated to providing science and technology support for Australia’s defence and national security needs. DSTG is a national leader in safeguarding Australia by delivering valued scientific advice and innovative solutions.

 

THE ROLE

Power and Energy Systems Group within the Maritime Division requires an individual who has proven experience with a large gas capture technology.

This is a full-time, fixed-term tenure role that will ideally commence in July 2020 and is initially for 3 years, with a provision for two options to extend for up to 12 months each. Some of the tasks associated with this role include:

  • Optimize and operate the demonstrator of the Air Purification Unit;
  • Investigate and test a number of different hollow fibre contactor technologies on the demonstrator;
  • Development a simple model of the system and identification of key areas for optimisation by industrial partner;
  • Completion of an investigation into power, efficiency, size and design trade-offs by an industrial partner;
  • Research and procure key hollow fibre contactor and ionic liquid materials for industrial partner;
  • Oversight of the development of a demonstrator by the industry partner, providing expertise and solutions as required; and
  • Maintain a program of fundamental research in ionic liquid CO2 capture agents.

The nature of this work shall require successful candidates to undergo security vetting to obtain a Negative Vetting 1 security clearance.

Additionally, eligible applicants shall also need to address CS Executive Group’s selection criteria:

  • A degree in Chemistry or a relevant scientific discipline, as well as proven hands-on experience;
  • Experience in the construction and operation of large scale gas capture apparatus and in the use of hollow fibre contacting modules for gas capture applications;
  • Experience in the safe handling and storage of large volumes of chemicals;
  • Understanding of the fundamental and applied principles of chemical gas capture of CO2;
  • Experience in the synthesis and use of protic ionic liquids;
  • Experience collaborating with a number of external stakeholders to achieve research goals and in the preparation and publication of academic peer-reviewed publications; and
  • MUST be willing to obtain an AGSVA security clearance to the level of Negative Vetting Level 1.
